I was a bit surprised that so many puzzle and word lovers were unfamiliar with the &quot;schwa&quot; concept. There&#039;s a pretty good explanation of how it works here:

And Peter, the &quot;un-schwaed&quot; CORPS OF NATION was meant to sound like the word CORONATION.</description>

I thoroughly enjoyed working your puzzle in The Springfield Sunday Republican (Massachusetts).

The one answer that seemed to break your schwa pattern was 3 down=corpsofnation - I can&#039;t figure out the &quot;un-schwaed&quot; word!.
(of for the schwa ) (corpsenation?)
That said-I went to the LA Times and verified it!
